Türkiye has strong potential as an education hub, but several structural problems – from recognition uncertainty to housing and visa issues – could slow growth and push international students elsewhere.
Recognition lists in countries like Iran, Turkmenistan, Iraq and Egypt quietly decide which Turkish universities can recruit students – and how realistic Türkiye’s target of 1 million international students really is.
In 2023–2024, Türkiye hosted 336,366 international students. Ten countries – led by Syria, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan – account for a large share of this total and shape the priorities of Turkish universities.
